The 2025 Volunteer Management Progress Report has been published, download here. But if you are short of time, I summarise the findings below.
The report, authored by Tobi Johnson & Associates, analyzes volunteer recruitment challenges and strategies based on a survey of 1,061 volunteer leaders across 19 countries.
Key Findings:
Recruitment Challenges: Volunteer shortages persist, though some organisations report an abundance.
Time Constraints: Many leaders struggle to balance recruitment with other responsibilities.
Marketing Gaps: Most organisations rely on word-of-mouth (88%) and social media (83%) but underutilise advanced digital marketing.
Data Tracking Issues: Few track recruitment conversion (27%) or retention rates (39%), limiting strategic improvements.
Volunteer Capacity: Numbers have rebounded post-COVID, but competition for volunteers has grown.
Strategies for Improvement:
Enhance digital marketing (SEO, email automation, paid ads).
Implement better tracking of recruitment and retention metrics.
Secure stronger organizational support for volunteer engagement.

Newsletters - Yep, I am about to pitch a newsletter tool, on a newsletter.
But most of your organisations send periodic newsletters to your volunteers but this tool (the one we are using to send this) is a major step up from other tools we have used like Mailchimp.
Beehiiv is built specifically for newsletters. It is affordable and incredibly easy to use.

Inter Organisational Connectivity
That is a mouthful. Essentially, the perfect functionality for federated organisations.
Connect the “hub” to local organisations
Offer hub supported recruitment whereby local organisations can post roles to the hub website seamlessly and immediately
Centralised reporting where the hub can create real time dashboards consuming key source data from all the local organisations
Create template groups, forms, report templates etc. Firstly to allow for quicker implementation by local organisations but also improved standardisation of data and processes
That’s it for now, until next time ✌️
